The a;sand environmental awareness campaign is a large-scale sand art project that takes the expanse of Korea's west coast shoreline as its canvas. Using sand, the most elemental of materials, it is a sculptural experiment drawn directly on the land, forming patterns with nothing but hands, tools and the material properties of the site. The geometric forms and repeated lines spread across the beach exist only temporarily, changing and disappearing with the tide, the wind and the passage of time. Rather than using nature as a backdrop, the work adopts a land art approach that treats nature itself as the medium, exploring the relationship between place and artistic action. Because the form is made on the premise of its own vanishing, it leaves no trace on the environment — and that in itself becomes the message. Through a form briefly inscribed and then gone, the work proposes a new awareness of space and time.
